Family tradition

The hotel is being run by three generations who work together to create the magical experience of the Hvala Hotel and the Topli Val restaurant.

Families Hvala and Marksl – Chronology

  • 1976 - Cvetka and Vladimir Hvala return from Portorož to their hometown and start their own business.

  • 1977 - A piece of the Mediterranean is soon transferred to Kobarid. The village inn Pri Danici is renamed to Topli val. The first seafood dishes make an appearance in their hometown.  Mediterranean cuisine on the threshold of the Julian Alps is proving to be innovative, desirable, and welcome.

  • 1980 - Word of Topli Val transcends the borders and reaches  Italy and Austria.

  • 1984 - Due to increased needs, the inn is renovated, enlarged, and turned into a restaurant.

  • 1997 - Beginnings of expansion into the hotel industry. Fresh beginnings in a renovated hotel called Hotel Hvala and relocation and the continuation of the tradition of the Topli val restaurant.

  • 1998 - Earthquake in the Soča Valley. Hard times in every way possible.

  • 2000 - It seems that the beautiful Soča Valley has finally been placed on the tourist map and Kobarid on the culinary map of Slovenia and Europe.

  • 2003 - The hotel and restaurant are taken over by the second generation – the young ones.  Aleš, Vesna, Tanja, and Gorazd continue the tradition started by Cvetka and Vladimir.

  • 2015 - The third generation starts being actively involved in the restaurant.

  • 2017 - Restaurant Topli val acquires the first sommelier - Žiga completes the first stage.

  • 2021 - Žiga and Nejc successfully complete the second level WSET.
